Frequency Stability and Control in Regional Power Grids with Multi-Source Renewable Energy Integration

"多源可再生能源接入下区域电网频率稳定与控制关键技术"

Driven by the national "Dual Carbon" strategic goals, the penetration of fluctuating renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic (PV) power, in regional power grids has been rapidly increasing. The large-scale replacement of conventional synchronous generators by these renewable energy units has led to a significant reduction in system rotational inertia. Furthermore, the inherent randomness and intermittency of their power output severely weaken the grid's primary frequency regulation capability. These factors contribute to increasingly prominent frequency fluctuations, posing serious challenges to the secure and stable operation of the power system. This special issue aims to explore strategies for fully leveraging and coordinating the regulation potential of diverse resources, including wind, PV, and conventional hydropower. The objective is to facilitate the development of a new collaborative frequency defense framework to ensure the dynamic security of power grids with a high share of renewable energy.

在“双碳”战略目标的推动下,风电、光伏等波动性可再生能源发电在区域电网中的渗透率迅猛增长。这些新能源机组大规模替代传统同步发电机,导致系统旋转惯量显著下降,其出力的随机性与间歇性也严重削弱了电网的一次调频能力,致使频率波动问题日益突出,对系统安全稳定运行构成严峻挑战。本特刊旨在探讨如何充分挖掘与协调风电、光伏、常规水电等多种资源的调控潜力,构建新型频率协同防御体系,以保障高比例新能源电网的动态安全。

Chair: Assoc. Prof. Dong Wang, Wuhan University of Technology, China

Dong Wang is currently an Associate Professor with the School of Automation, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan. His research interests include stability modeling, analysis and control of renewable integration. He has led and participated several projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China, Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and State Grid Power Grid science and technology projects. He has publised more than 20 academic journal and conference papers, and received a best paper award for IEEE TEC.  

Chair: Prof. Yunhui Huang, Wuhan University of Technology, China

Yunhui Huang works at Wuhan University of Technology, engaged in long-term research on the stability and control of new energy grid connection. Presided over and participated in the National Natural Science Foundation of China, national key research and development projects, Guangdong Provincial Offshore Wind Power Joint Fund, State Key Laboratory Open Fund, State Grid/China Southern Power Grid science and technology projects, etc. Published 45 academic papers (12 SCI indexed and 19 EI indexed), with 836 citations (data source: Web of Science). In terms of teaching, I have guided students to participate in various levels of subject competitions and have won 10 national competition awards and 8 provincial awards in the past five years. In terms of scientific research, we won the third prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of State Grid New Source Company in 2021, the SPEED Excellent Paper Award, the CIEEC Best Paper Award, and the CEEPE Best Report Award in 2024. In 2024, he was awarded the title of Outstanding Young Scientist by CEEPE and the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award (Basic Research Category) by the China Power Supply Society. From 2022 to 2024, continuously selected for the annual impact list of the top 2% of global scientists.  

Chair: Assoc. Prof. Wanning Zheng, Wuhan University of Technology, China

She is an associate Professor of Wuhan University of Technology, she has long been engaged in the stability analysis and control of new energy grid-connected systems and flexible DC transmission. She has presided over a number of horizontal and vertical projects, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Digtal Grid Research Foundation of China Southern Power Grid, and the State Grid Technology, etc. She has published more than 20 papers, including 7 SCI papers as the first or corresponding author. 2024 She was awarded the Second Prize of the Scientific and Technological Advancement of the 10th Power Supply Society (Sort 3), and the First Prize of the First National Colleges and Universities' Electrical Professional Courses Experimental Teaching Case Design Competition (Sort 3). First Prize (Sort 3) of the First National University Electrical Course Experimental Teaching Case Design Competition.
